Brooklyn Bridge Bruecke

The Brooklyn Bridge in New York, connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan, was built at a time when horse pulled trucks and ships had to carry all the building material. Underneath a video to this.

Preschool in Malawi

For years Petra had the wish and desire to spend some time in an African country and to do something for children. This year now she managed to get to Malawi, raise funds and sponsors and to build a (Pre) School in Chilambe. She went there by April, 2007 and returned one week ago. Her twin sister Josefine first joined her in July, then decided to do an own project, raised funds and sponsors and built a school in Chimpesa (Malawi).

Chilambe and Chimpesa belong to the district Chiradzulu.

Oh, so beautiful !

Josefine writes:

Project: Building a preschool for the children of Chimpesa (small village in Malawi/Africa)

Reason for doing this project: The function of a preschool in Malawi: Mothers can work some hours of the day without looking after their children (aged between 3 and 6 years).
While teachers care for these children and teach them basics of the alphabet, rhymes, months and numbers, their mothers can do very important thinks like taking water from the borehole to their home or working in the field. Because of the preschools, mothers can do this work intensivly, so that after preschool they have time for their children.
If there would be no preschools, it would take much more time for the mothers, to do important work and it would be much more difficult for them and for their children as well. Many preschools in Malawi are on the ground under Mangotrees. But when the rainy season comes, the children can´t meet any more on the muddy ground, so preschool-buildings are very useful.
The preschool of Chimpesa was built whithin 3 month and there where 800 Euro needed all in all (cement, labour, door, ironsheets, nails etc.).
Duration: July 2007 until October 2007

Building a school for Chimpesa:

These pictures show the steps, in which the school was built:

Men of Chimpesa village are preparing mud with water of the borehole (brought by the women of Chimpesa village).

Mud is given into the wooden brick-boxes.

A mud brick is made.

The mud bricks dry in the sun for some days.

Brick Oven.

The dried mud bricks are burnt, so that they get their characteristic red color.

The foundation is prepared by the men of Chimpesa.

Building of the walls.

The roof is made of wood and ironsheets.

The school is finished, the children can visit it now.

A BIG THANK YOU TO THE SPONSORS
